Rainbow Mountain Tour Briefing

The Rainbow Mountain or Mountain of Colors are names used to call this beautiful place but the local people call it Vinincunca which means Rainbow mountain in the native language which is Quechua, this magical place is located in the Department of Cusco between the provinces of Quispicanchis and Canchis. This mountain is special since it is possible to see the colors of the rainbow and depending on the season and climatic conditions it is appreciated with greater or lesser intensity, to this spectacular view is added the combination of the snow-capped mountains of the Vilcanota mountain range that is located the snowy Ausangate (6385m./20945ft) which is the highest snowy peak in all of Cusco, you will see see South American camelids such as llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and with a bit of luck we can see the condor, the largest bird in the world flying over the mountains.

Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Chillihuani – Phulawasipata – Rainbow Mountain

Pick up from the hotel at 3:30 am, then we will make an approximate journey of 2 hours in our tourist transport to the south of Cusco to the town of Cusipata (3310m. 10810ft.), where we will take the cutoff and continue driving for 20 minutes until the Chillihuani town where we will have a buffet breakfast.

After our energetic breakfast we will continue driving 40 minutes to the checkpoint of the Rainbow mountain, we will register and continue 20 more minutes to Phulawasipata, where we will get ready for the walk.

We will begin the hike up the rainbow mountain, this first part is 3 hours until we reach the Vinicunca viewpoint, where you will have a spectacular view of the snow-capped mountain Ausangate (6385m./20945ft.) and the Rainbow Mountain (5050m./16564ft.), after having free time for some photos and to contemplate this beautiful landscape, we will begin the walk down to the town of Chillihuani where a delicious lunch awaits us and then return to Cusco and the hotel at approximately 4:30 p.m.

How long does it take wakl up the Rainbow Mountain?

The hike up to the rainbow mountain normally take around 2 hours but it depends on your walking pace can be 2hours / 30minutes or 3 hours and is a distance of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). Throuhghout your journey you / will pass through a vibrant green valley with the snow capped peak Apu Ausangate towering in the distance.

Is it worth going to Rainbow Mountain?

If possible as long as you take the tour in private service, but we usually leave as early as possible since the earlier we arrive and start the walk we will be able to reach the viewpoint and have the best photos without people around us, leaving later than the programmed for sure that there will be many people in the viewpoint and it will be a little uncomfortable.
