Travel Guide

Machu Picchu, the ancient Incan city nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, is one of the most iconic and sought-after travel destinations in the world. Known for its stunning archeological significance and breathtaking scenery, it offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past and an unforgettable travel experience.

Getting There

By Train: The most popular way to reach Machu Picchu is via train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of the mountain. PeruRail and Inca Rail offer several daily services with varying levels of comfort and luxury.

By Foot: For the more adventurous, the Inca Trail is a historic trekking route that leads directly to Machu Picchu. The classic trek takes four days and requires a permit, which must be booked well in advance. Other trekking options include the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek, which also offer stunning routes to the ancient city.

By Bus: From Aguas Calientes, a bus ride of about 30 minutes takes you up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Buses run frequently throughout the day.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. The weather is generally clear, and the trails are in better condition. The peak tourist months are June, July, and August, so consider visiting in April, May, or September for fewer crowds.

Tickets and Entry

Tickets: Tickets to Machu Picchu must be purchased in advance from the official Machu Picchu website or authorized travel agencies. There are several types of tickets, including entry to Machu Picchu alone or combined with climbs to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

Entry Regulations: Daily visitor numbers are limited, so it’s crucial to book early. Visitors are assigned entry times to manage the flow and preserve the site. You must enter within your allocated time slot.

Exploring Machu Picchu

Guided Tours: Hiring a guide is highly recommended to fully appreciate the historical and cultural significance of Machu Picchu. Guides can be booked in advance or hired at the entrance.

Main Sites:

  • The Sun Gate (Inti Punku): Offers a panoramic view of Machu Picchu and is the final checkpoint on the Inca Trail.
  • The Temple of the Sun: A semi-circular construction thought to have astronomical and ceremonial significance.
  • The Room of the Three Windows: Notable for its impressive masonry and views.
  • The Intihuatana Stone: Believed to be a ritual stone associated with the astronomic clock or calendar of the Inca.

Hiking Huayna Picchu: This steep hike offers incredible views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding area. It requires a separate ticket and is limited to 400 hikers per day.

Tips for a Great Visit

  • Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to acclimate to the high altitude.
  • Pack Light: Bring essentials such as water, snacks, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket. Large bags are not allowed inside Machu Picchu.
  • Stay Hydrated and Energized: The altitude can be draining, so drink plenty of water and eat high-energy snacks.
  • Respect the Site: Follow all regulations to help preserve Machu Picchu. Stick to designated paths and do not climb on the ruins.
  • Photography: The morning light is great for photography, but the site is less crowded in the afternoon.

Accommodation

In Aguas Calientes: There are numerous hotels and hostels ranging from budget to luxury. Some top choices include:

  • Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel: A luxury eco-resort.
  • Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel: Known for its hospitality and views.
  • El MaPi by Inkaterra: A more affordable option with good amenities.

In Cusco or the Sacred Valley: Many travelers choose to stay in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before heading to Machu Picchu. Both areas offer a range of accommodations and are rich in cultural and historical sites.
